Dried Chives
Dried Chives for Gourmet Recipes
Dried chives are a must in a gourmet pantry. They add a subtle flavor that is milder than garlic or onions. Dried chives can add a signature flavor to many gourmet dishes, particularly complementing egg and potato recipes. Chives maintain their flavor well in dried form, making them a convenient herb to keep on hand.
Uses of Dried Chives
The two gourmet dishes I use chives for are eggs and potatoes.
Using Dried Chives in Egg Dishes
When making an omelet, add 1 tsp of dried chives to three eggs, along with salt and pepper, to add a subtle flavor.
Add dried chives to the egg mixture and Aromat seasoning when making quiche. This combination adds a great savory flavor.
Using Dried Chives in Potato Dishes
Dried chives are excellent for finishing roasted and pan-fried potatoes. Adding 1 tbsp of dried chives per 8 tbsp of melted unsalted butter is a fantastic way to finish a gourmet potato dish.
Chives and sour cream are a classic baked potato topping. The white sour cream and green chives work well with baked potatoes and provide an excellent presentation.
Cooking With Dried Chives
When cooking with chives, it is imperative to maintain their flavor. It is best to add chives near the end of cooking and avoid excessive heating and extended cooking times. Eggs are typically cooked at an acceptable low temperature to maintain the chives' flavor. Higher-temperature dishes such as fried potatoes require the chives added at the end of cooking to preserve their flavor.
